SESSION 8: Competitive Light-Weight Metals and Nanostructured Alloys


Symposium Polymer derived ceramics

This session aims at reviewing the recent developments in the field of materials science and engineering applied to light-weight metals and alloys from both experimental and theoretical points of views. It will cover the topics of alloy processing, solidification, solid state transformations, characterisation and modelling analysed with the help of modern materials science and engineering tools such as ab initio calculations and in situ observations.

The session will present contributions and stimulate discussions on both experimental and theoretical studies, employing state-of-the-art techniques and providing insight in fundamental and applied aspects of materials science and engineering of light-weight metals and alloys The session will bring together international experts on alloy processing, solidification, quantitative microstructure characterization, thermodynamics of phase transformations, precipitation, stress related issues, ... Papers investigating physical processes from the atomic scale to the mesoscale (micrometer) and macroscale, either experimental (SAXS, SANS, APT, HRTEM, TEM, MEB, DRX …) or modelling (Ab-initio, Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo, Phase field, Mean field models …) are particularly welcome, especially those making a link between the different scales.
